i went to Croatia and bosnia back in 1999 (while NATO was bombing Belgrade, so a trip to Serbia - or even the Serb part of Bosnia - was kind of impossible in a car with a Danish license plate), and I LOVED Sarajevo. I was staying with friends of my aunt in an apartment where the family used to sleep in the kitchen because all other rooms had large windows that overlooked the mountains and were consequently the targets of snipers in the hills. Some of the furniture still had bullet holes...
