Was is it again that A Very Long Engagement couldn't be nominated for foreign film? I know there's a reason. It should be best picture, but I knew that would never happen.

Where's Kill Bill, Vol. 2, the year's best picture and best actress?

It was probably the prospect of another speech from the podium that killed it's chances, rather than the movie itself.

National film boards can only nominate one film for consideration of best Foreign Language film. Not only did France choose Les Choristes, they ultimately ruled that, due to a majority of its funding being American, A Very Long Engagement wasn't a "real" French film. But I have to say I've never loved Jeunet, and think the film needed about 20 minutes trimmed.

Now I just need to find a job in an office with fun, interesting, people...d'oh! Strange thing is most of the contenders haven't been released in Oz yet.

Moore excluded himself from Best Documentary, so he couldn't be nominated there. That left Picture, Director and perhaps Screenplay--all long shots for docos.

the pre-nom list of eligible docos was only about 14 films long. But I gotta say Super Size Me was lame.

Motorcycle Diaries was a Brazilian production. Since it wasn't in Portuguese, it didn't get the film board's approval to represent Brazil in the Foreign Language category. The politics of the Foreign Language category are perplexing and intriguing.
