My paternal grandparents were Oirish immigrants who gave roughly half their brood of 8 Oirish names (Ethne, Padraic, Una, Kevin). Da--Padraic in the family, Paddy to the rest of the world--wanted to be nothing but American growing up (as often the progeny of immigrants do.
So I was John Patrick rather than Seán Padraic, sadly. I *love* my name in Irish. And being one of 4 Johns in my class was annoying and confusing. In my mid 20s I toyed with changing it, but really I *am* John Patrick E....and always will be.
