Ma is home :)
Mar. 11th, 2005 12:11 pmWe got Ma home, shortly before 17h00 NYC time!
When we got to the hospital today, Ma’s doctor had a message for us: when Ma shows the staff she can walk up and down the hall a bit, unaided, without oxygen, she could go home.
Ma and I looked at each other. She’s not been able to walk without oxygen for 5 years!!! Jaysus!
So we worked the Eastern and Western fronts: we had Da call the doctor’s office, and had the hospital ask the doctor to pop in. Da did his bit beautifully, and when the doctor came to Ma’s room I explained things. He was very good (not like his fookwit partner of a few days earlier); once he found I knew a bit about medicine, well he totally warmed up and got all her paperwork ready for discharge in about 30 minutes. New ‘scripts, contraindications explained, accomodations described, and la la la. We dialed the Bearphone* and awaited his arrival.
Getting Ma home wasn’t easier, however. She couldn’t get herself into or out of the car, nor into or out of her wheelchair. In fact, I had to lift her into her mini-elevator-chair-thingy once we were chez eux. And it took probably an hour before she recovered from the stress. But she’s got her own bed, her own digital cable, her own telephone, and her own personal service team of 3 (
riderofkarma,
jawnbc and the Bear).
We totally trump Peninsula General Hospital in Arverne/Far Rockaway NY 11692. Except for their ICU, their ICU rawks.
Tomorrow I’m releasing myself with
riderofkarma for a few hours. Just a few. And we’re trying to organize a family BBQ for Saturday or Sunday. As many as Ma’s progeny (and her progeny’s progeny) under one roof as can be arranged on short notice.
