un demi-jour de congé
Mar. 12th, 2005 01:34 pmWith no hospital travel required, this morning was less structured. I slept badly so I stayed in bed a bit longer--10h00. Abluted, awoke
riderofkarma, and got organized for our day.
taxe29 popped in as a surprise--yes, my brother Tom is on LJ, though he’s not entered anything...yet), which is always good fun. But Jen and I had plans so we headed out just after 12h00.
On the train ride into Manhattan (The S shuttle from 116th St Rockaway Park to Broad Channel, then the A train to West 4th St) we listened to our respective mp3 players. Once in town we wandered the West Village a bit, until we found a Mexican joint (Burrito Loco). It was pretty good, even though I saw a mouse scurry across the floor (floor? fine. table? that would’ve been bad). We then wandered the shops of the Village, working our way towards Soho. I picked up a couple of wee gifties, by I had an agenda...
...the Apple Store in Soho!
I’d not been to the embodied manifestation of commodity fetishism. It was tauntingly good fun: so many pretty things. I salivated in various sections for about 45 minutes, bought nothing (be proud
querrelle), and head off back towards Rockaway. We got home around 17h00, just as Da and Ma finished their meatball dinner (Ma: just meatballs. Da: meatball and sausage hero). Since then it’s been puttering, yammering (my cousin Maureen called, she rocks), and looking into travel plans for Rendez-vous Montréal the kweer sports/cultural/academic festival in Montréal 2006.
Tonight: a DVD, a chat with ma man and another with
toneyvr.
And Ma’s getting slowly better: appetite today, throat getting less sore, a visit from the homecare nurse this arvo. My optimism is slowly growing.

Oh. My. God. Broad Channel.
Date: 2005-03-12 04:52 am (UTC)I think my friends from Belle Harbor called it "the white trash riviera" or something to that effect.
Anyhoo, thanks for the little blast from the past! Glad to hear Ma is doing better.

Date: 2005-03-12 06:22 am (UTC)I worked in the city from 86-89 (midtown and downtown), and lived in Belle Harbor (86-87) and Park Slope (87-89). Even as it changes it's full of genetic memory.
All that's left is a dirty water hot dog and a knish. Oh, and a bagel!

Date: 2005-03-12 06:27 am (UTC)Every time there was a near miss with a hurricane it was always the Channel rat dwellings that flooded. I wonder if we know any of the same folks from Belle Harbor (I"m currently on 127th between the Boulevard and Neponsit)? My name is actually John Egan.

Date: 2005-03-12 07:47 am (UTC)I graduated with a Bryan Egan... but then again, Egan must be a VERY common name out there! And I don't even remember if that's where he came from!
