Vancouver's 2010 Winter Olympics emblem chosen

For those unawares, Vancouver (and Whistler) will host the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in February 2010. This weekend, the official emblem was launched, which incorporates an Inuit Inukshuk--an unique, iconic structure from Canada’s frozen North.

Very cool - I want to see how they are going to adapt it (him? her?) for specific events. (It reminds me a little of the isometric style that one of the Innsbruck Winter Olympics used that worked really well in different forms.)

So any good sources on the details of inukshuk and what Ilanaaq means specifically?

I like it. Inuit culture is more than 4,000 years old, I think they are the oldest group of nomadic people in the North....? Although the Inuit dislike being lumped together with other Native peoples, it might serve to bring some attention to the presence and struggle of North American Indians in the US and Canada.

Of course, I had nothing to do with the selection process but, it seems rather static for an athletic event, even if it looks good. I wonder if any discussion was made about that lack of dynamism in the chosen icon...

To say I'm disappointed with this would be a large understatement. It is entirely too close in style to the Bejing and Barcelona logos, and much too sparse for my liking. I much prefer the Vancouver 2010 bid logo to this, it spoke more to the area of Vancouver and BC rather than taking something from an area not particularly close.
