Canada and Australia: a Tale of Two Divas
Mar. 10th, 2003 07:42 pmKylie....Céline.....Céline....Kylie.
Who wins? Who loses?
Was at The Midnight Shift last night. Singing. Whooping it up. It’s one of those fab, rare places in the gay male world--everyone’s pretty friendly, cutting lose, unwinding. Bears, twinks, leather, grey gays. A veritable hoot!
On any night, you’re guaranteed at least one Kylie song/video every 90 minutes. So in a 4 hour stint, that means au moins 2 tracks, possibly 3. And while suffering through one of her quite mediocre singles, the parallels between her and Céline were suddenly stark. Both women:
got into show biz as teens/youths (Kylie on Neighbours in her teens, Céline singing in Québec and France at 12)
Started their music careers with biggish hits (Locomotion for K; Ce n’était qu’un rêve (Q) and D’amour ou d’amitié (F) pour C)
Both have been become stars around the world
Both are scorned for being overexposed
Both are in the mid-30s and are nearing 20 years in da biz.
Both have done great songs that even folks who deride sheepishly admit to not hating (Can’t get u outta my head, K; my heart will go on, C--though it’s now in the “I will always love you--if-you-play-that-fookin-song-I’ll-kneecap-ya-ya-gobshite category)
So it’s an interesting comparison. But let’s look at the differences:
Bilingual? C, not K
Hot bod? K, not C (eat will ya?)
5 octave range? C not K
What does this all mean? Absolutely fook all
Who wins? Who loses?
