It was a good day, yesterday. Lunch, tea, chatter, and then an evening with my evil dyke twin Noel*. We hemmed and hawed for sometime about where to go for dinner, but decided to gamble on a semi-tawdry looking steakhouse. Which, it turns out, was terrific: we each ordered surf n turf and had a grand feast. I was feeling so pleased I ordered a latté!
So I must first give props to Theresa, the woman who brought Noel and I together. In 91 or 92, I was starting to pal around with a new friend (Theresa); a few months later she started dating this girl Noel. Noel was--is--fierce, in a hip/cool Lesbian Avengers sort of way: back then she was fond of cutoff jeans, Doc Marten boots, baseball caps, big thick "I'm smarter than you" glasses and black brassieres. Yes, usually without a shirt, or one left unbuttoned. I had recently moved in with Tone, and sometimes Theresa and Noel would come over for tea. 3 of us would gab and chatter along, while Noel sat with her arms crossed, glaring. Finally Tony had to ask:
"Noel, you don't seem to be enjoying yourself here. Is it you dislike men?"
"Nothing personal Tony, I just don't have much use for you."
Oh. *gulp*
Long and the short of it is Noel and Theresa's relationship began to unwind just as Noel and mine began to pick up speed. After Tony, she was the first true friend Id ever had. She was doing a PhD in Canadian Literature, and had I not met her I doubt I'd have gone back to grad skool myself. She was the first persons I knew, particularly a working class kid, who had attempted a doctorate. So props to Noel as well!
Noel and I "get" each other, a rare thing. Not that we're identical in our thinking, but pretty close. We're pretty sure the Universe purposely put us 3000km apart during our formative years less we:
A. burned the town down
B. got married and procreated
C. Both A & B
And even though we live far apart now, our hearts don't. Gawd I love this woman!
*Her parents didn't realize that the female version should've been spelled Noelle
