My last post was purposefully cryptic. Rather than full-on whinge here, I stomped my foot once (OK maybe twice) and picked up the phone. [livejournal.com profile] toneyvr and [livejournal.com profile] querrelle each were the kind of excellent pals I need in times like this. So went to bed merely pissed off and hurt, rather than biting my own tail.

Last night was funny though. I was “sent” to spend the evening with Nanny--as if I wouldn’t do it in a heartbeat anyways--so I toddled over the 3 blocks around 19h30. Nanny is 96, lives at home with 2 of her daughters, and most people would guess she’s around 70. She moves slowly, sleeps more and more, but generally she’s quite healthy.

Except she’s become nearly stone deaf. Sort of....but I explain that later.

After 10 minutes of “whath? whath?” Nanny showed me her hearing aid wasn’t working. We spent 20 minutes coming the house to find another battery, and found several--none of which had any charge left (I binned them). Rather than have her spend the holidays sitting in a room with her hands folded not understanding a fookin’ t’ing going on around her, I offered to get some batteries.

“No, ‘tis too far, and ‘tis awful out dere an’ Jaysus I’ll be fine!”
“Too bad, I’m goin’”
“No! I won’t have it! Jahn you’re crazy, I’ll be fine...”
“It’s not for you, it’s for us--we want to talk to you!”
“Oh”

So Aunt Eileen tossed me the keys to the nunmobile (owned by her convent, not her. Vow of poverty etc. And I was off. Duane Reade closed at 20h00 and I arrived @ 20h10. Waldbaum? Fermée. Finally found a store open, got the batteries (and some ginger ale for Brenda), and back to Nanny’s. “New” hearing aid still didnt’ work, but one of the older ones did. Being totally deaf must be very difficult, particularly when one loses their hearing after many years. Except...

...turns out, she’s deaf in her left ear; the right one works almost normally. Her throne is on the right side of the living room, which puts her good ear facing a wall. Were she willing to move her chair to the opposite corner, this would almost be a non-issue. Just for fun I dragged her around in her armchair, just to hear the girlish shrieks (of joy). I’m her favourite, I can get away with murder with her. But I use my powers for good, not evil.

Then I showed her the video from Atlantic City, plus some from Australia. She was tickled. Then upstairs to Aunt Ethna to repeat the process, then home.
