There are times when I feel blessed for being 2000+km from most of my family; there are rarer instances where I'm bereft because of said distance. However it's all changed with my parents and sister moving to rural Pennsylvania.

When everyone was still in/around Rockaway I could realistically fly into NY for a weekend. Both Cathay and Air Canada fly non-stop to JFK, whose runways we could see from our house, were it 20 feet taller. But getting to Scranton-Wilkes-Barre airport means changing planes--ORD with few exceptions--or perhaps flying to EWR and driving 1.5 hours. Either way the day becomes 10-12 hour for travelling: entirely too much for a 3 day trip.

Ma had a bit of a rough week, but seems to be better this weekend. However Nanny fell on Friday and broke her hip. Once admitted to hospital, the doctors discovered her kidneys are barely functioning. They're treating her pain, but have to try and improve the kidney function before then could operate and set her hip. 101 sucks hard. Reality that Nanny's been not herself for a long time--particularly these last several months.

Right now it'd be nice to have the option to drive out, if even for just an hour, to see them both.
