This week’s eclectic purchases:


Ramones, Anthology: When they came out, everyone thought they weren’t at all original. When in fact they totally pinched the best bits from all sorts of artists--and wrote the best 3 chord songs maybe possible sort of like ever? And besides, they sang about “Rockaway Beach”--how frickin’ kewl izzat?



Bee Gees Number Ones: Saturday Night Fever aside--a couple of tracks I think were actually quite good--these guys wrote some great songs. A few years in the dustbin and they pulled “You Win Again” out of their arses. Still would call this guilty pleasures though.

And.....wait for it......



Britney Spears My Prerogative: I wouldn’t call Miss Britney an artiste or nothing, but there’s some good pop here--much of it Scandipop™ long before anyone outside the Eurovision/schlager circuit knew there was such a genre. And I must admit, even I got some wood the first time I saw the “Hit Me Baby One More Time.” If only a little.

I got an interesting peek inside what academic guys think in one of my semianrs. We were discussing Adorno and the whole high art/pop phenomena of the late 20th century, and Britney Spears came up. The other woman in the seminar started discussing it as Spears playing into ideas of desirability and sexuality. Then to a man, they all started chiming in about how unattractive they found her. Was kind of eye-opening, because I thought *that* was what men found hawt.

And then there's the time my boss was puking a lung over the whole thong-hanging-out-your-pants fashion.

See I'd see that as a socially constructed discourse; with men in mixed female/male public spaces proffering what they see as a palatable take on things like Britney. I mean, if they were to say "that's my kind of woman," how would more mainstream women respond? Not well...

Not that all str8 idealize that look.

When I was in grad skool, aside from watching Teletubbies every morning before The View, I endeavoured to disrupt the niceness whenever appropriate. Not to be an asshole, just to make things a tad more reflective of the lives we were living outside the ivoried walls.

No...they were pretty turned off by the video, actually. (Another said he'd prefer the male dancer, who, I have to admit, was quite attractive.) I don't think it was being polite, as their reactions was more of a gut level, "Dear god I'd never sleep with that." :)

Studying: doctorate in music composition. Seminar was in critical theory, with an emphasis on late Marxist thought.

To think I was supposed to go to Rockaway today, too, on the Q53. It's like the bus to Dalkey, taking all the Oirish from Woodside to Rockaway. The only thing changing my plans was the unexpected rain.

I think when there are women in the room, straight men have a different gut than when there aren't any women. Yes, they may be responding at a gut level, but I think it's more a survival gut level (looking attractive to women) than lust (wanting to bust a nut).
