It's nice to be nice. Really. But it's also almost always good to be forthright. Which means some folks might not take that as being "nice". Pas ma problème...

Some work-related creative juices flowing today; been writing up a storm. Some days I can't get a sentence down on paper screen. I'm at 611 words after 45 minutes, go me. Subject: the construction of queer male adulthood. There's a bit o' Butler in there too Becky!

This weekend was fun. Going out a bit. Time with my honey. Time with Marko. Marko should be moving to Vancouver with us.

Got the reviews back for a book chapter I submitted a while back (on queer adult education au Canada). "Excellent overall" was how it was described. But how's this for a paradox: please add (6 things, about 300 words) but make the text 400 words shorter. I've emailed the editor saying "say wha?"

Yesterday I finished seasoning my new jeans (wearing each pair around the house for several hours to get them to stretch a bit). They look and feel righteous, even with the zipper. Though I nearly gave myself a pubicure when zipping up too quickly. Whoa!!

There was a tectonic court ruling on health care in Canada last week--so tectonic I've not posted about it. But here's the deal: with few exceptions, I've been mightily pleased with rulings issued by the Supreme Court of Canada. It would be churlish of me to all of a sudden say "they're totally wrong" when previously I've found nearly all their rulings as more than reasonable. In fact, the SCC is one of the main reasons I have faith in Canada over the long haul. And in this instance they seem to have carefully avoided throwing things into chaos, by limiting their ruling to Québec.

...my interpretation is that the SCC has said "the social contract between Canadians and the Federal and provincial/territorial governments has not been honoured. The Feds--under the Liberal party--effectively undermined the system by slashing funding levels. If that funding isn't restores, and if the health system of each province/territory doesn't demonstrate a willingness to pursue innovative ways to increase access and dramatically reduce wait times, the principal of universal access isn't being honoured." My prediction? Some of the things that BC and AB have been doing will be adopted more widely and the Feds won't penalize anyone (both BC and AB get health funding withheld for using private facilities).

Dear fellow Canadians: we don't have "free public health care" in Canada. We have a publicly administered, mixed public/private system. And we pay for it, it's not free. But we're right to cherish and protect it.

Go you.

I always have preferred zippers to buttons. Easier access for all.

The jukebox never played "Your Eyes" or "Angel" at the Schlager bar or I would have send you my own video meme singalong by camera phone. Probably just as well. That camera phone keeps getting me into trouble.
