I live in the 2nd most livable and I'm moving to the most livable according to this list. Melbourne and Vancouver are always vying for the top spot. I'm lucky to have lived in both. They are definitely both great cities. I think Melbourne's better though... :)

Probably if you look at the whole metro area: having West Van included skews the real estate prices. You can still rent a nice large 1BR downtown for less than $1,000/month. Even less as you go a bit farther out. 1 BR condo downtown can still be had for less than $200k. Still a lot of $$ but on the East side they're often less than $100k.

Buying houses is much more expensive though. Ofcourse we have lots of cheap, reliable hydro :)

you're gonna love it.

But bear in mind, Vancouverites are more polite and friendly than warm. It takes a surprisingly long time to "break in" to the social scene (perhaps because so many come here for only a short while)...don't make the fatal error of tumbling into a clique of newbies from MB/SK/AB who only socialize amongst themselves and whinge about "how cliquey Vancouver is".

Could take as long as a couple of years to feel like you've found your niche...but it's usually a great niche!

Yeah, I've heard about how hard it can be. We'll see. That's the one thing I'm gonna miss about Winnipeg: I finally have a really good group of friends out here, and I'm gonna be leaving it behind, moving to a place where I don't really know anyone.

Well, I'll do my best to do a lot of things and to meet a lot of people. And I'll try to get over my little streak of shyness and actually ask people to hang out.

I thought Vancouver and Toronto were locked in a vicious battle to the death to be the most atrociously overpriced city in Canada. Currently Vancouver may be winning, but don't they switch places every few years? Don't worry, Toronto will regain the crown soon, I'm sure.

I agree. Coming from a place where having a good conversation with somebody you met is enough to be life long friends, here people are so polite that it can be confusing. You go to a bar to meet people but nobody talks to you because it's impolite to talk to someone if you haven't been introduced formally by a third party.
I've assimilated myself and now I do it too.
