What a full day, with a few surprises even. The sun was burning so it was definitely beach weather; however I had a few things to do first. I hit an old childhood haunt The Sand Bar (a snack and booze pit) and grabbed some knishes for my and Nanny's (and Auntie's as it turned out) lunch. I also grabbed a boogie boards for cousin-in-law; having grown up in Eire he never learned how to swim, but float he can...on a boogie board. US$20, what a bargain!
Walking back to the house I ran into my cousine Maureen, who is like a sister to me. She's uber-efficient and had driven in from Connecticut mere minutes earlier. After the quick lunch I slopped slapped and stomped down the beach. And the gang was all there: my sister Kath and her 3 youngest (Katie, Richie and Grace), my cousine Michelle and her husband Jimmie (and their son Desi, a 35# not fat 2 year-old), my cousine and her ilk. We spent our summers on the beach as kids, with our parents playing our parts. Felt like old times. Even my cousin Desi and his wife Patti made an appearance, while Desi & Michelle's mum Geri--Geri, btw is one of the funniest people I've ever known--watched their daughter Grace.
Did I mention the Egans are strong supporters of recycling...when it comes to names? Every single one of us shares one of our names with at least one other cousin.
After the beach we adjourned to the back deck for a BBQ. Ma made her way downstairs and had a visit with Nanny (they're best friends, aside from mother- and daughter-in-law), while the rest hung out in the back. Da grilled dogs, chicken and "kansas city steaks". It was warm, it was fun, it was a bit nuts. It was us at our best. When a quiet moment presented itself I was able to give a wee birthday giftie to Kath--who loved it. I also had something for one of her daughters.
The surprise guests? Mike the mystery brother showed up (photos to follow, but I got 'em). So did my cousin David. Both are the least sociable (though not precisely anti-social) of the brood. Normally we only see the two of them together if there's a wedding or funeral. And both disappeared as quickly as they appeared...sous le vent.
Just chatted with my handsome husband. Will rejoin the gang for a bit. Happy Canada Day to all!
