The Vancouver International Film Festival opens in a couple of days. Years ago i did the travel for it, when the big opening gala was "Little Man Tate". No Jodi didn't attend. I got some freebies to some of the big events, which was fun in a I-wouldn't-pay-for-the-company-of-these-eejits way. However, as the festival's increased in profile, so has the calibre of fliums. I've booked tickets for 3.

Volver: Almodovar's latest. I think he is the best filmmakeer out there, period (Yimou's been in a rut for about a decade, probably since Gong Li dumped him). Every film is better. How excited? Rub your diamonds on my nipples, let's see what gets scratched.

Away From Her: Canadians best know Sarah Polley from her servitiude on The Road to Avonlea. But you might know her from The Sweet Hereafter or My Life Without Me: she's a great actress. But this is her feature directorial début, and the advance buzz is strong. The film is based on an Alice Munro short story favourite of mine "The Bear Came Over the Mountain", and stars Julie Christie, Olympia Dukakis and Gordon Pinsent.

10 Canoes: Pitched as the first Australian feature film whose dialogue is 100% in Ganalbingu (an indigenous Australian language), this is the Ozzie entry for Best Foreign Language Film at next year's Oscars. David Gulpilil (The Tracker, Rabbit-Proof Fence) gives the English narration.

While I know it's treading dangerously close to "damning with faint praise" (or "endorsed by Hedy Fry!", for that matter), Away From Her also won the best film award at the Sudbury film festival last week.

You did travel for the VIFF?

I traveled to the VIFF, but I arranged my own travel.

I saw Ma Vie en Rose, David Searching (already a fave after it premiered at USAFF in Dallas thanks to art director [livejournal.com profile] moroccomole, and Mrs. Dalloway.

Haha. Volver played here months ago.

The best film at the gay film fest here this year was Canadian, "Whole New Thing" - amazing - don't know if you've already seen it but if it shows up somewhere near you, g o and watch it.
