Scientists await eruption assesment

The threat of a lahar hangs over Ruapehu, but its mayor says the district is prepared.
A high risk warning has been put in place following a small earthquake beneath Mt Ruapehu. The quake, which measured about 2.8 on the Richter scale caused a body of water to form and break a trigger cable that is part of the Department of Conservation's lahar (volcanic mudflow) warning system.
Ruapehu Mayor Sue Morris says it appears to have been a small burp that is under control at the moment. She says no one knows when the lahar will go, so it is very unnerving and always on your mind.
But Morris says the council has good emergency procedures in place, should a lahar be triggered.
A high risk warning remains in place on Mt Ruapheu after the lahar alert.
The crater is off limits to climbers, while the valleys further down are considered medium risk.
The Department of Conservation and GNS scientists hope to fly over the Crater Lake on Friday afternoon.
Cloud has so far prevented any view of the area.
DOC says as soon as that is done warnings could be downgraded by early Saturday.
