do you have your root password still? If that works, you can delete your normal user account and recreate it with something you remember at the command line with useradd. Most distros will tell you the default root password when you boot from the CD or they leave it blank.

dhcpd should be up and running by default. As far as I know, it may be a matter of your kernel not having the right module for your NIC. Here's all the information you'd probably need to ever know:

http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Ethernet-HOWTO.html

Once you get the right module, you may need to reboot. I don't think inetd will start all the necessary daemons unless there's an active net connection.

We Ubuntu too! Not that I understand anything about it. Dave goes on about partitions and whatnot and I smile and nod.

Ubuntu here, too...well, my computer's actually dual boot so that I can still use Windoze when I have to (like porn DVDs that refuse to play in Linux, etc.), but I use the Linux partition most of the time these days.

To get connected to the net, I had to download a few files from my ISP first (another reason why keeping a Windoze partition was helpful...), and copy them into /etc/ppp/. On my old computer, I also had to run something called pppoeconf after doing that, but on this one, IIRC, my connection just automatically worked once the ISP files were in the right place.
