wear a helmet
Feb. 17th, 2009 08:59 pmLast night Winnie and I hit Cypress again. It was dead quiet; it had also been about 5 days since any measurable fresh snow. So we went up expecting things to be perhaps OK. And they were precisely that: A fair bit of messy snow and a fair number of icy patches. But it didn't suck and we quickly agreed a good 6 or 8 runs would be just fine.
And so on run 6 or 7 I was coming down behind Winnie on Panorama. Come down one bit I saw a hump of snow just a bit too late to avoid it or to carve a turn across it. I hit air and came down hard, catching my edge and doing a propellor thing. Head and back slammed hard into snow with very little cushion in it.
Sat up, did a quick inventory and felt the ringing. Best decision seemed to be to get down the mountain safely and quickly, which I did. Winnie dropped me home and after a bit thought it best to hit emergency (one eye dilated, one not is not a good thing usually).
Were there less than an hour and after a good neurologic work up, came home. Expected to wake up in pain, but it's not been bad at all.
Wear a helmet kids. And I won't be boarding again until it's spring skiing or there's fresh snow.
