As [livejournal.com profile] jawnbc  awoke from blackout sleep uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed into an A-bear a giant dung beetle.

We have finalized our travel plans for this summer, largely. We're flying to London on points (in this case "free" includes almost $500/person in taxes and fuel surcharges), will travel to Portsmouth to see an old mate of [livejournal.com profile] querrelle's, then travel to Ireland via train and ferry. Haven't been on a nice long train ride in years: very much looking forward to it.

We'll be in Eire for 8 days, helping the father-in-law settle into his new home outside Rosslare. Whilst there I'll try to get myself into the Irish social welfare system (a social insurance/social security card/number), so I have that in my pocket were we ever to live in Europe. We'll also have a couple of days in London.

Booking the flights was tiresome. I spent over an hour on the Aeroplan website trying to find the a way to get YVR-LHR/DUB-LHR-YVR for as few points as possible. Aeroplan offers "any flight" awards that use stoopid amounts of points (which I didn't have anyway), and "classic" ones that don't. If we couldn't get non-stops into/out of YVR next preference would be via YYC or YEG: travelling via YYZ means a longer trip and one of those hateful 6 hour red-eyes that arrive in the UK at 07h--23h Vancouver time. No thanks.

In the end we ended up leaving 2 days later than preferred, but on the non-stop. And we ended up buying the BD DUB-LHR ticket, since we couldn't get a seat on points. It's a cheap ticket ($140 for 2, including all taxes), but because it's a separate ticket we have to reclaim bags in Heathrow and re-check them for the AC flight home.

Will be helping  a bit with the kitchen as well. And doing some work-work. My back's a bit to the wall regarding the course I'm teaching (and writing). I prefer to have things done wicked early, then have the run-up week to review with a fresh pair of eyes.
