this year's Eurovision

It's 6 weeks until the final in Oslo. We now know all the songs. There's two retreads (previous entrants), a few atypical songs, more than a few Eurovision-by-the-numbers. And, after a good effort from 3 of the big 4...it's (mostly) back to bi'ness for the Big Boring Lazy 4 (UK, Germany, Spain, France).
Quality of song? Meh. I only see a handful of standouts in a good way. Such as:
Lako je sve - Feminem (Croatia)
If these girls are vaguely familiar, it's because this is their second kick at the Eurocan: back in 2005 they represented Bosnia with "Call Me" a lightweight tribute to the Eurovision (it was the 50th Contest that year).
This is a very polished, very well performed (unlike in Kyiv, where they were off-key), nicely choreographed contemporary song. Could it win? It could...but I expect it will be top 3, which would be Croatia's best ever result.
Shine - Sopho Nizharadze (Georgia)
If I had to pick the best song this year, it would be Shine. It builds really nicely, it's a positive message, and Sopho does a pretty good job of it. A better singer could totally win with it; I'm predicting top 5.
Satellite - Lena Meyer-Landrut (Germany)
Danke Deuschtland for making an effort this year. Since 1998 if Germany's done well at the Eurovision TV chat host Stephan Raab has usually been involved. This year he hosted an extended national final season that left the Germany people a choice between two good performers and 2 decent songs. The quirky accent is charming methinks and it's instantly catchy. Also top 5; could sneak in for Germany's second win evar...
It's for you - Niamh Kavanagh (Ireland)
Niamh is our second recyclage--except she's actually won the Eurovision--back in 1993. For years she's said she'd consider going again if the right song came along. It has. This is the first Irish entry since 1998 that I'm actually proud of. I don't think this has a prayer of winning, but I do think it should sail into the final and make the top 10. And don't worry, she's not doing the black widow frock in Oslo.
Me and My Guitar - Tom Dice (Belgium) [scrub to about 0:42 to get to the song bit]
This deserves to win and I think it just might. Tom's a musician. He's singing a song he wrote. About trying to have a career as a musician in the music industry. He performs it so genuinely and well. And because of all those things, and his charming, unassuming style, this stands out by a mile. I am hoping--and predicting--that we will be in Antwerp next year.
