Jun. 12th, 2011 11:06 amIt is a time of preparation. Nay, not for the Rapture: we Catlicks aren't terribly pre-occupied with it and really Jaysus said sweet fuck all about it. Hardly seems Christian then, does it?
No it's time to prepare for sojourn Europe 2011. Yes
jawnbc is about to embark on another meandre in the land of (largely) intact penises.
I'm presenting this paper at this conference in Novi Sad Serbia. Novi Sad, if you're not awares, was one of the primary targets of the NATO bombing campaign of 1999: lots of manufacturing here, especially weapons. This past week I've been organizing all the documentation needed for the trip: etickets, hotel confirmations, registration receipts, info on trains and ferry tickets to be purchased once in the region.
I'll be in the former Yugoslavia for almost precisely two weeks. After Novi Sad (which I'll ditch after a couple of days, since the last day of the conference is skewed towards IT) I'll spend a couple of days in Belgrade. Then my adventures really begin! I'll be visiting:
Whilst I'm in Europe,
querrelle will be scuba diving out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean on a diving expedition. So it'll be the longest we've been incommunicado since we met--10 days. This does not please me; him having a wonderful diving trip does those. Immensely.

Sarajevo: I've wanted to visit since the 1984 Olympics...though a number of the Olympic venues were destroyed or damaged during the horrible war. But I also want to see some of the history of the city (and Bosnia overall)--especially as it relates to the war of the 1990s. I'm hopeful putting my boots on the ground will help me make some sense of the horrors of that period. Hopeful, but not expecting so in 3 days.
Split: originally I was going to spend 3 days here. Instead I'll have one night and one fullish day. Because while Split's supposed to be lovely the islands are supposed to be os-some. So I'll be ferrying off to...
Hvar: having applied a sophisticated algorithm that integrates loveliness, ferry times and fares, accomodation prices and ability to connect with other homosexualish persons (seems to be a lot of married men online in Croatia), and the need to reach my next destination on 28 June, Hvar is it. Apparently it's "all that" as far as the Dalmatian islands are concerned and there will be a few of the bootiful people there holding forth. Yeah fine, woteva: I'm going for sun and sea. And I'm hoping that my keeping my speedo on whilst on the nudie beach won't cause offense--not because I'm shy, but because I like my tan lines. A lot. I think they're dead sexy. After a couple of nights here, it's back to Split, where I catch a bus to...
Dubrovnik: yes, the famed walled city. The Riva. The jewel of Dalmatia. My plan is a day of touristy and another day of beach. In both Hvar and Dubrovnik one takes a water taxi to small islands for nicer beaches. I would have stayed an extra day in Dubrovnik were it not for the hotel costs. So 2 nights here then...
Zagreb: which I've seen before, including a lovely lunch with their hawtness
vksi ,
mitjablazic ,
paterson_si and Igor (Mrs.
paterson_si ) so won't do much touristy stuff. In fact I'm hoping to connect with Tomaz and Igor either in Ljubljana (2 hour train ride from Zagreb) or somewhere between the two cities. Zagreb is really one full day because I fly back to Vancouver early on the 2nd morning.
Whilst I'm in Europe,
Today I'm working on packing lists and will do the penultimate drug store run. Then lounge by the pool on our sunny Sunday!
