When I was a kid, I loved being sick. That’s when Mom was at her Momest.

I got to sleep in the hide-a-bed (Castro Convertible as we called it) in the living room, and I decided what was on TV--no small matter for a wee fook with 3 older siblings. If we were feverish we got rub-downs with alcohol. Mom’d even sleep with me if I asked. Did I ask? As Millhouse on the Simpsons would say, “Did I? You betcha!”

Truth be told, I’m not deathly ill; it’s a bad cold or a wussy flu. Lots of sleep (16-17 hours a day) is making a world of difference. Tomorrow I should be right as rain, and since rain is in the forecast for tomorrow, there’s a certain syncronicity to the path as it seems to unfold.

But being *really* sick on your own is awful. Frightening. I remember living on my own in Hongcouver and coming down with food poisoning in the middle of the night. Couldn’t even crawl to the washroom, took what seemed hours to get to the phone (I now sleep with a cordless one, just in case). By the time my pal Tone arrived, I was both physically and emotionally destroyed. 4 litres of IV fluids and a morphine-based anti-nausea, and I made it home for sunrise. But it scared the bejaysus out of me. And ever since, as soon as I get gastro, I know to go directly to emerg, since I lose fluids wicked fast, and always need at least 2 litres, even after a couple of hours of, well, icky stuff top and bottom.

I woke earlier (10h00) than yesterday, but was quite foggy. Did manage to do 3 loads of laundry, and am now on a freshly made bed. I’d previously arranged supper with friends tonite, and feel up to it--and need a good meal after 2 days’ grazing.

Bad Bangkok, Terrible Thailand
This from a listserv I’ve just joined; apparently the Thai government’s taken the ‘war on drugs’ to the extreme. I figure if I’ve not heard about it (and my work includes research in injection drug users and HIV/hep C), neither have many others:

“THAI LEADER JUSTIFIES 1,100 DRUG WAR DEATHS

Thailand’s populist prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, has admitted for the first time that mistakes have been made in his month-long “eye-for-an-eye” war on drugs that has claimed more than 1,140 lives.

But Mr Thaksin remains unrepentant about the bloody campaign, dismissing widespread allegations that many of the deaths are extra-judicial killings by the police.

“It’s normal that we have some mistakes in such a big war, and a few cases may be the work of officers since there are some bad officers,” he said in his weekly radio address on Saturday.  “We have to resolve the problem.”

There was an outcry last week over the killing, probably by the police, of an eight-year-old boy, Chakkapan Srisa-ard.

Mr Thaksin said police were responsible for only 28 of the deaths, and all of those were in self-defence.

The police yesterday put the death toll at 1,035, including 31 shot by officers.  The authorities say most of those who have died have been the victims of the drugs gangs’ drive to silence potential informers, but human rights activists say the police could well be responsible for several hundred of the deaths.  Mr Thaksin established two committees on Friday to examine police behaviour during the campaign.

“Don’t be moved by the high death figures,” Mr Thaksin said in his address.

“We must be adamant and finish this war.  Don’t you worry about our next generation? When you go to war and some of your enemies die, you cannot become soft-hearted, otherwise the surviving enemy will return to kill you.”

The prime minister urged people to focus on other figures: 29,500 arrests and the seizure of 5m methamphetamine pills.  He said the campaign would be extended beyond its planned three months.

Thailand is considered the world’s largest market for methamphetamines, also known as speed, with 5% of the population thought to be regular users.

Many analysts say the seizures will make little difference as the supply - mainly from neighbouring Burma - has barely been contained. “
