A wee bit of good news in the email today: my submission for an updated text on adult education in Canada has been accepted. Topic: queer adult education in Canada.

When I pitched it I wasn't sure it'd fly--not because of any unwillingness of my peers to include queer stuff. Rather, the book's size limitations meant squeezing something new in required it to be pretty special.

So I get to write what will arguably be the seminal piece on queer adult education in Canada? How frickin' kewl is that?

Having a doctorate helps. Even though I have a terminal degree, I'm still in a very difficult spot when it comes to getting published (written). When a studio degreed person gets published it usually means an exhibition, not writing a paper or a book. Independent scholars are usually Ph.D. candidates or post-doctorals. Can you sense my ongoing frustration?

I was accepted to present a paper at a conference two years ago but, had to provide my own transportation. Since I couldn't. I didn't go. Being an adjunct, the community college where I was teaching wouldn't send me. That's for fulltime professors.

So what exactly does that mean, queer adult ed? Adult ed where the students are queer? Queer teachers? Queer curriculum?

I used to do Adult Basic Ed (literacy) and it was frustrating that nobody seems to have written about people who didn't get basic education because they were out and harassed at school. We used to see that in about 15% of our clients. There was no research or guidelines or anythign out there, at least, at that time.

Not being the sharpest tool in the shed academically, I don't fully understand what this means, but I can tell its way cool. Congratulations John!
