This song was about suicide, being left at the altar, and widowhood--all sung to a happy-g-lucky tune, sung by and Oirishman
"In a little while from now, If I'm not feeling any less sour.
I promised myself, to treat myself, And visit a nearby tower.
And climbing to the top, Would throw myself off . . ."

Yup Alone Again, Naturally by Gilbert O' Sullivan (born in Waterford Eire; moved to the UK at age 11)

A Dutch treat, with a Roman goddess and shit (no, the 80s remake doesn't count)
"A Goddess on a mountain top
Was burning like a silver flame
The summit of Beauty in love
And Venus was her name"

Of course, Venus by Shocking Blue. Bananarama also made it to #1

Winning isn't everything: this 4th place Eurovision track hit #1 around the world. Dean Martin did a mediocre version as well
"Volare-oh, oh! Cantare oh, oh, oh oh,
Nel blu di pinto di blu Felice di stare lassu"

Volare (Nel blu di pinto di blu) went to the top for Domenigo Modugno.

She ripped this song off from an Italian popstar; a couple of years later she did it again.
"Gloria, you're always on the run now
Running after somebody, you gonna get him somehow"

RIP Laura Branigan, who burst onto the scene with Gloria in 1982. The second song was Self control still one of my favourite music videos from the 80s

Céline had a #1 with it; before that the woman in #4 above barely made the top 40. But the original was huge everywhere--except the US.
"We're heading for something, somewhere I've never been
Sometimes I am frightened, but I'm ready to learn about the power of love"

Jennifer Rush, paradoxically, is from New York city. Like Donna Summer she went overseas to establish herself The Power of Love (which she co-wrote) broke all sorts of chart records in the UK. I love Céline's version, but Rush's is more ethereal and erotic.
