Mary Black is arguably the best singer in Ireland. She started in folk, and has moved effortless--and deftly--through pop, country, jazz, even rock. She's a consumate interpreter (she doesn't write) and sings with an incredible warmth.
She's also a committed feminist, who organized the CD A Woman's Heart, which used contemporary song to underscore the challenges faced by many Irish women. Nearly 1 million copies were sold in a country with only 3 million people.
I once was at a corporate charity CD sale (all CD's for $1, proceeds to charity, they're were promos and overstock, my Ex worked for a music retailer). I over heard a woman lauding Mary Black, so I spotted a CD and grabbed it for myself not knowing her stuff at all at the time. It turned out to be the only MB CD in the lot. But for a buck, I was determined to try it.
