Mucus means Oscar
Jan. 24th, 2005 12:42 pmSaturday I had sniffles. Yesterday I had a cold. Today I’m a bag o’ dirt. So time to make my Oscar predictions:
BEST PICTURE
“Aviator”
“Finding Neverland”
“The Incredibles”
“Million Dollar Baby”
“Sideways”
Really the best of the bunch is The Incredibles: great script, great story, and the film only could have worked as animation.
BEST ACTOR
Don Cheadle, “Hotel Rwanda”
Johnny Depp , “Finding Neverland”
Leonardo DiCaprio , “Aviator”
Jamie Foxx, “Ray”
Paul Giamatti, “Sideways”
It’s Foxx’s year, barring his saying/doing something so controversial that there’s a backlash
BEST ACTRESS
Annette Bening, “Being Julia”
Catalina Sandeno Moreno, “Maria Full of Grace”
Imelda Staunton, “Vera Drake”
Hilary Swank, “Million Dollar Baby”
Kate Winslet, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”
Royalty will trump performance (Staunton) and while Swank is great, she’s already got one and this time Bening will win
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Thomas Haden Church, “Sideways”
Jamie Foxx , “Collateral”
Morgan Freeman, “Million Dollar Baby”
James Garner, “The Notebook”
Clive Owen, “Closer”
Tough call--I’ll go out on a limb with Freeman. Though I’d much rather lick Owen’s (unshaven) chin
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Cate Blanchett, “The Aviator”
Virginia Madsen, “Sideways”
Sophie Okonedo, “Hotel Rwanda”
Natalie Portman, “Closer”
Meryl Streep, “The Manchurian Candidate”
Even tougher: ingénue (Portman)? Resurfacing (Madsen)? the new Kate Hepburn playing Kate Hepburn (Blanchett)? I’ll go with Madsen, but not confidently
Best Foreign Language film
China, “House of Flying Daggers,” Zhang Yimou
Spain, “The Sea Inside,” Alejandro Amenabar;
India, “Shwaas,” Sandeep Sawant;
Denmark, “The Five Obstructions,” Jørgen Leth & Lars von Triers
Brazil, “Olga,” Jayme Monjardim;
Only 1 film per country, so The Motorcycle Diaries and A Very Long Engagement weren’t eligible. It should be China in a walk.

Date: 2005-01-24 02:49 am (UTC)Did you see Annette Bening's work in "Being Julia"? I've read lots of positive things, but have not actually spoken to anyone who saw the film. I'm curious.... It will be interesting on Tuesday to reread your post after they announce the Oscar nominations.

Date: 2005-01-24 02:54 am (UTC)I've not seen half of 'em! totally going on politics, hype and instinct.
I wish Gael Garcia Bernal was an Actor contender for The Motorcycle Diaries. Making a figure like Ché Guevara seem human is quite the achievement methinks.

Date: 2005-01-24 04:08 am (UTC)Not sure if The Incredibles will get a Best Pic nom. It's just so rare. I think (well, hope) that Eternal Sunshine gets that slot, even if it doesnt have a chance to win.
And I hope you're right about Annette winning. Love Hillary, but poor Annette's already lost to her once!

Date: 2005-01-24 11:54 am (UTC)I see them giving it to anything but the incredibles as there is a best animated film category. Probably Million Dollar Baby/Sideways showdown.
Best Actor:
Jamie Fox.
Best Actress:
They could give it too Annette Benning, as to make up for the loss to Swank when she was nominated for American Beauty. Though Catalina Sandeno Moreno would be my personal choice.
Best Sup. Actor:
I could see them going Clive Owen on this. Though I like James Garner personally.
Best Sup. Actress:
Sophie Okonedo, Hotel Rwanda I think. Portman's got too much career in front of her.
Best Foreign Film:
Flying daggers is all I saw, sadly. Though I thought of Motorcycle Diaries as well... hmmmmph.
