On Sunday 23rd January at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, former Irish Eurovision Song Contest winners gathered together for a special concert in aid of vctims of the Asian tsunami. A total of €90,000 was raised, and the money is still pouring in.

With the exception of Dana and Johnny Logan, all of Ireland's Eurovision winners took part. The event was co presented by two former Eurovision Song Contest presenters. Carrie Crowley who did the task in 1997 and Mary Kennedy, who presented the 1995 contest. Mary Kennedy wore both of her Eurovision outfits for the concert.

The show opened with Save Your Kisses For Me sung by Linda Martin, Niamh Kavanagh, Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan. This was then followed by Linda singing a bilingual version of Non Ho L'Eta, Niamh with Puppet On A String, while Paul and Charlie sang Boom Bang A Bang. More Eurovision winning songs followed with Niamh performing Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue, Linda with Après Toi and Eimear Quinn with Tu Te Reconnâitras. The first half of the show then finished off with a performance of "Riverdance".

In the second half Chris Doran, who represented Ireland last year, filled in for Johnny Logan by singing both What's Another Year? and Hold Me Now. Eimear sang Ein Bisschen Frieden, along with the DAYMS choir. Linda then gave her performance of her 1984 entry Terminal 3, and Niamh sung Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi. Then it was onto performances of their respective Irish winners from the 1990's, and then finally finishing off with everyone on stage giving a rendition of Waterloo.

If that wasn't enough, in between all of the above, the Gaiety Dancers interpreted some of the other Eurovision Song Contest winners including an excellent performance ofDiva.

The whole show was over three and a half hours long, and the audience really got involved, singing along to all of the songs and giving some of the performers a run for their money. The show itself was recorded and a DVD will be produced, from which all proceeds will benefit the Eurovision For Asia fund. Anyone interested in obtaining the DVD should enquire to EuroforAsia@hotmail.com. Prices and further information will follow later.

Pretty much all my favourite winners ('cept Un Jour, Un Enfant--who dares to feign Frida Boccaraness????). Damn. Can you hear my heart breaking?

And she beat Mary Hopkin (who hated her song, forming the third in the Embarrassed British Female Vocalists Trilogy alongside Sandie Shaw and Lulu) and Katja Ebstein (who spent most of her time in retirement supporting progressive causes. And should have won the contest).

And am I the only one who noticed how much Dana looked like Veruca Salt?

Don't hold “Theater” against her. Katja is a class act all the way. I actually kinda enjoyed “Theater,” but it's got everything to do with her and nothing to do with the rampant finger-puppet wearing egotist on piano. And as for her mime backing vocalists, to quote Julia Duffy, “I always thought mimes were rather quiet.”

Pretty much all my favourite winners ('cept Un Jour, Un Enfant--who dares to feign Frida Boccaraness????).

I kinda hoped for “De Troubadour,” but I don't think anyone was willing to tackle the Dutch language. I mean, it couldn't have been that hard to find a classically trained guitarist, could it?

You've obviously never heard John Ashcroft's "When the Eagle Soars"

No - but it was featured at the inauguration as sung by a former Lawrence Welk Show singer.

Which one? My first crush was on a Lawrence Welk Show singer. Years later when I was in my 20s I recognized him in a crowd (sitting behind me in church actually). So I told him he was my favorite. He was surprised 'cause he said that he didn't have many fans my age (25 at the time). And then I told him I'd had a major crush on him. I think he was flattered somehow. (This is a 100% true story by the way.)

I don't need a pic of Guy Hovis ... he's the one I was telling you about. He still makes me tingly for old times sake.

But I didn't realize you were serious about him singing Ashcroft's song at the inauguration ...

Quite serious, sadly.

I tried to go and deliver your message, but instead I had to watch a Swiss film (Beresina or The Last Days of Switzerland (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0204164/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTIwMHx0dD1vbnxwbj0wfHE9YmVyZW5zaW5hfGh0bWw9MXxubT1vbg__;fc=1;ft=20;fm=1)) with relatives of Lys Assia.

I received an IrishVision VCD from Johnny Logan in the mail this morning ... so I almost feel as if I was there anyway. ;->

I've already laughed until I cried ... but I think the hurling was from that bad salad. And since I picked the package up on the way to work I tried to play it on my work desktop, which didn't have the proper codec installed; so then, I left the package on my desk in clear violation of the clean desk policy. So I don't know yet. That's just me. (I'm glad the clean desk inspectors didn't come around last night - that's not a joke, they do have a team of clean desk inspectors here b but they seem to have given up on my desk.)
