I’m sitting in Ma’s (and Da’s) room. Ma’s watching television--if I hadn’t personally popped out of her uterus I’d be sure that she had a Y chromosome lurking about somewhere: she runs the remote like it’s nobody’s business! I’ve spent about the same amount of time in her as I was spending at the hospital: 6-8 hours a day. I bring my laptop, and amuse myself between requests for assistance. Assistance as in turn the ceiling fan on (then off), open the window (then shut it), answer the phone, bring her meds. But really my job is being here. and the work’s good. Da’s great (aside from Ma, he’s also the chief errand boy for Nanny and Brenda and Aunt Eileen), but he gets up Ma’s nose: she says my hanging with her “makes me feel more secure.” That’s as good an employee evaluation as I could ask for.

I also cooked a whack of chili, and dropped some over for Nanny et al. Then stopped at the supermarket to get some salad stuff for tomorrow’s family barbecue. Ma’s looking forward to it--I knew she would!

Ma’s main problem continues to be her throat, although that’s improving too. She’s eating almost the equivalent of a Ma meal each day (over 3 or 4 snacks), and getting a lot more fluids into her (mostly Pepsi, but also some milk shakes). So her body’s throwing a lot of resources at her throat, making it heal quickly, but the hyper-production of mucus is pretty unpleasant for someone with breathing difficulties. In fact last night she didn’t sleep at all; fingers crossed tonight’s better.

Today was Melodifestivalen day: the day Sweden selects its entry for the Eurovisions Song Contest. I watched the webcast today (a first, and perhaps a last for me. OK probably a first). Sweden takes this all very seriously: 4 semi-finals where the top 2 advance, as well as a répéchage for those who just missed the cut. It results in 10 very polished acts, almost all of whom are established stars in Sweden, if not internationally. Of 10 songs, at least 6 were ABBA derivative; the winner was “Las Vegas” by Martin Stenmarck--which is loungish (most of the songs in the running this year are available for legal, free download here). It was a perfect distraction.

In 48 hours I’ll be en route home. And for the first time I’m thinking that perhaps Ma will be around by the time we move to Vancouver. That would be pretty incredible. I’m sure of one thing at least: her will to live is fierce.

She ain’t done yet. Me too neither.

Your Ma and my godmother have so much in common. Same generation, same fierce will to live, and same disease from the same cause. Every time we thought it was all over, she surprises us all again and lives for another Christmas, birthday, wedding, visit, etc. I suspect there's livin' to do yet, and she'll see you safely to Vancouver.

And you've the same blood in your veins.

I'm in SYD on the last leg home; will see you in Vancouver if not before.

Thanks for making me smile big.

Good news. And your presence there gave her a lot of strength--I'm sure of it.

You're a good son.
