yesterday morning I didn’t manage a call to Ma in hospital, so I rang her last night before we went to sleep. NY’s 14 hours behind Sydney right now, so our bed time is her brekkie time. Turns out Ma was getting sprung in a couple of hours, since “I’m so much stronger now.”

Here’s the funny part: every time anyone calls her Ma says “stop calling, it’s too expensive.”

“Ma it costs (US)$.04 a minute to call you from Australia.”

“I don’t believe, stop calling.”

I didn’t stop, of course, I just missed the one call. But apparently she’s been badgering Da to call less and visit only once a day (Da runs a tax service, so the 15 April deadline loomed large for him). Well Da took her at her word and didn’t call her Thursday night--and since the hospital isn’t in NYC (it’s in Nassau County on Long Island), she couldn’t call him and arrange her ride home Friday morning.

“Ha, well you bit yourself on the ass with that one Ma--see what happens when you tell people to stop calling you? They stop calling you!. Next time tell them to call briefly . . .”

[laughter] “Yeah, you’re right. Alright, this is too expensive, hang up. I love you Jawn.”

“Love you too Ma”

Apparently, Ma won’t any longer be trapped in her bedroom either: she’s strong enough to make a trip down to the breakfast nook (with the aid of home chairlift, and the longest Oxygen hose you ever did see), so she can spend some time in the Spring sunshine. Now we just need Da to put the the housecleaning supplies out of reach--the whacko will no doubt try to start doing chores.

I'm glad to hear your mom is home.

Your family scares me a little bit (I'm sure I'm not the first). But in a good way.

Sounds great, John! :) And people do have a problem understanding that international phone calls are almost cheaper than long distance calls. It sounds like your mum has lots of spirit which is a great sign. *hugs*

I dunno if chores are necessarily bad--I find my peace in the sink a lot of the time.

May she be vigorously complaining about the cost of phonecalls for many-a-year yet!

It's annoying, and endearing how moms latch on to something like that, and miss enjoying the conversation. I'm so happy to hear she's at home-- that will certainly speed her recovery. Best wishes to her, and you!

Naw, I'm a night owl. I'm a big boy now. I've got the house, mortgage, dog, job, insurance, car, retirement plan ... and, oh shit. Now I'm old. When that happen? Well, I can drink from the milk carton if I want too, and the cookie dough is all mine.

Good

Hey

Good thing that your mother is doing fine! And she's like mine, who doesn't tollerate me calling her unless she sees that the number is from my office.

Hugz

I'm glad to hear that she is doing better. Hope that she gives herself the time to fully recovery. My parents used to pull the "it's too expensive to call" thing when I lived long distance, until I stopped calling for awhile. After that I convinced them that I wouldn't call if I couldn't afford it. But I could, so then it was okay with them for me to call.
