1) How did a NY boy, with Canadian citizenship end up in the land of Oz?
Well I moved to Vancouver because my nutbar partner of the time did all the leg work. I helped pick the city, but if it weren't for him it wouldn't've happened. We broke up shortly after my arrival and I found the city and country from which I was separated at birth. No wonder I was such a mess in NYC, being a queer socialist. Hello!
Australia was strictly a career move. I was finishing my PhD, and wanted to eventually work at the same university from which I graduated. So I had to "go away" for awhile. Conventional wisdom said I should've taken an assistant prof job at some awful school in some awful (but cheap) place--most likely the States (relatively few universities in Canada, though the calibre is high). I conceptualized a research project that was timely and "sexy" and it involved comparing someplace to Vancouver. Rather than using a US city (no health care, few human rights protections for queers) I picked Sydney. I'd been there 3 times previously, and while it was OK I've never loved the place. So I came here for a year, but of course the one thing I swore wouldn't happen happened. His name is
querrelle . . .
2) How did you get into the line of work you are in?
My undergrad experience was very negative and bitter: if I was cranky before I sure was cynical after. It took 11 years for me to go back for a masters (I swore I'd do it within 5 years), but even then I was searching for a (teaching) credential to increase my rate as a contract adult educator. That "1 year" M Ed morphed into a 2 year MA, and before I defended that thesis I scored a PhD scholarship--with a salary even. It wasn't until much later I locked in on the academic path. My goal is to become a prof, get tenure, and radicalize the place (not entirely, but signficantly). Right now I'd just like a job!
3) Since you have experienced both....which is better to drive on - right or left?
I drive a scooter, which makes it easier to swap between the two. But I learned on the right, so it always feels more natural. However I will say that Canda, the US and other countries really should look at putting in more roundabouts (instead of stop and yield signs). Keeps things moving much more smoothly...as along as everyone driving uses them properly.
4) Who was the first boy you kissed? Describe him.
I can't remember if my friend CM and I kissed during our one, brief, furtive wank. So I'll say the 40ish black fella who fellated me in the basement 'loo at the Museum of Natural History in NYC. And yeah, I kissed him--freaked him right out. I've been freaking men out pretty consistently ever since.
5. Name the most beautiful place you have ever visited and why it is the most beautiful place?
Oh that's tough. Bora Bora is that magic island, perfect water, sun and sand everywhere.Vancouver is the most beautiful city to me--setting really, though I do like the downtown skyline. When I lived in Vancouver I was moved to tears by its beauty at least once a fortnight...I'll go with Vancouver.
Great questions! Thanks. Anyone want me to ask them some? Anyone? Yes? No? Dust?

Date: 2005-04-22 12:06 am (UTC)Buffalo's been putting the damnable things in left and right (and there were already tons to begin with). It's the hugest hassle because A) I have witnessed at least half a dozen accidents on the new one a block away from me alone and B) the city just turned all of our parks over to the county because they couldn't afford to keep them open; there's been discussion about shutting down the (3rd oldest in the country)zoo, and there's been talk about turning Buffalo's budget over to the federal government to work out because no one here knows how to balance it. Cosmetic road construction was just what we needed!
Don't you miss American local politics?
