Thanks to Svend Robinson, the first openly gay member of Canada's Parliament, sexual orientation was added to the Criminal Code's existing statute on hate speech (anti-vilification in some jurisdictions). Click here for the story.
Robinson deserves almost single-handed credit for this legislation, a rare example of a private member's bill (rather than legislation drafted on the sitting Government's order) becoming criminal law. On 2 occasions, the Commons committee holding hearings on the bill tried to stuff it up: both times Svend "held forth" until the committee ran out of sitting time, forcing the issue to a vote in the House of Commons.
He wrote it, he shepherded it, and we owe him. Why not drop him a note of thanks?

Sep. 17th, 2003 06:04 pmThere's a hurricane off the Eastern seaboard. We used to plan our hurricane parties copiously, knowing that the worst they did in NY was tons of rain and some coastal flooding. Of course living on a peninsula no more than 5 feet above sea level necessitates some denial. Then again the storm surge from Hurricane Belle in 1985 was about a foot high--still remarkably powerful--but no big whoop.
Tides are shifting here on the Wet coast as well. I'm trying to find my groove teaching, but alternate between dispassion and disdain. It took 5 years, but I'm officially now burnt out from having 25 year old contribute "sexism shouldn't be an issue, can't we all just be people?" No, we can't....now fook awf. I've got piles of other work, and a lover waaay too far away. And $$'s tight. I could do with a cuddle, and after finding a man with whom the sex is both intimate and nasty, merely "gittin some" ain't cutting the mustard. Though it no doubt keeps me from going postal. J'ai la tête qui éclate, j'm'voudrais seulment dormir....
