drive-by update
Nov. 9th, 2005 02:20 pmI'm in the gerbil wheel of life...oh no! Here comes Richard Gere! Help me! Heeeeeelp meeeeee!
Kidding. I'm a kidder. I kid you not. Or not not.
Back when we were still in Oz, one of the many things I said to
querrelle that will no doubt come back and bite me on the ass was "well in Vancouver I'd have no problem getting as much work as I want." That was mostly about not need a work permit and having something of a reputation/network upon which to draw. Well fuck me gently with a chainsaw if opportunities galore haven't rained o'er me this fortnight.
First I found out I didn't get the online grad class I wanted to teach, but I was offered a role as a tutor...which earns almost as much $$ with 1/10 of the work. The same folks hiring for that also approached me about working on a short-term, intensive research project--for which I'd earn several thousand before the end of the year. Sure! And finally I did get hired to teach one of the two classes I applied for for the January-April semester. What this means is I'll be able to significantly pay down credit card debt, quite possibly eliminate some of it. That'd be huge. And it all increases my options for more work down the line.
I'm also applying for extramural funding for my current role. Getting an external award (grant/fellowship) would give me much more autonomy, plump up the cv, and offer me some travel and research money. We put the proposal to bed today and I start the signature chasing tomorrow. It's due Tuesday, so I'm in good shape.
On the homefront, things are fine...no, they're good. It's just hard seeing the man of your dreams feeling blue. We're gonna kick up our heels this Friday at the local bear run's Underbear party--that'll help. And we're starting to field dinner invites from some of the locals: both of us are hankering for some socializing opportunities.
And Friday is a holiday, so no work after tomorrow. Except all the stuff related to above...d'oh!
