Yes, I was yuppie scum. I had one foot out of the closet, one finger on the 800 number for LL Bean, and my face firmly planted in the gutter most nights.
Overall the Oswego years were very good for me. I began to wrench myself from the family, and moved towards tolerating myself as a gay dude. I managed to perform adequately academically, but more importantly I did kewl stuff. I was an RA (preceptor, dorm bunnie), a Senator, I worked in a pub, in the dining hall, as a TA, and did a practicum placement in student services. I wrote for The Oswegonian too...but still did think enough of myself to get involved with broadcast media (something of a regret for me).
I also ran myself into the ground to catch up: flunking out of my first university meant losing almost a year--so I went to summer school and 2 winter sessions so I could graduate on time. BA in 4 years...totally the norm, but really I was lucky to pull it off.
The most amazing thing about grad? Nearly the whole family came. I only vaguely recall it, but I apparently gave Ma one of my (few) "this is what normal parents do" lectures...as in come to the first kid in your family's university graduation fer crissakes! Kathleen and Tommy and Theresa no doubt helped move things along too. So they all drove up the day before (8 hours from NYC), stayed the night in a motel, came to grad, took me to lunch, and drove all the way back.
All joviality aside, it meant a lot to me. As did getting the BA. But shortly after they left I had a mini-meltdown, skipped the post-grad booze-up, and flew home.
20 years ago next May. Maudit...
