New Apple laptops announced today...

....and a couple of hours later my iBook dies. Totally. Can't get it to boot up and Disk Utility says hte hard drive is failing.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck! At this point I just wanna boot it up again to run a backup to my external hard drive.

Any ideas?

I repeat: Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!

If you can get access to another mac and a firewire cable you can try starting it up in target disk mode. Then you can copy off any data you need to save.

I am trying to install OS X onto my external HD and if it works I'll boot through that and save what I can.

That's what I was going to suggest. My external backup drive is also bootable and has the backup software on it - so I can restore to any PowerBook and make it just like it was.

I don't know if this is even possible with PC's. They frighten me.

OK I got it booting wiht the external, but cannot see/access the native hard drive in the iBook itself. Disk Utility can't repair it either.

Any suggestions about a disc utility program that might help? Preferably a downloadable one....

DiskWarrior is pretty excellent. I have an older copy that saved my ass a bunch of times - though I haven't had a problem since moving to MacOSX.

It is downloadable. And since you're running off an external drive, should work for you.

cpratt, i believe, said a few days back that he got his dell laptop to boot after giving it a bit of a shake- such is only for the brave of heart, tho. Does the Genious bar charge for over the phoen consultations?

Totally sympathise with you. Thats what happend to my powerbook and I had not backed up properly last year. AAAAHHHHHHHHH
