jawnbcOn the Oscars: It's not homophobia, it's social capital. More players, more campaigning, more schmoozing, close race, equals your Oscar. The Crash krewe slapped more backs; besides, everyone but the Brokeback cast seem to make at least a cameo in Crash. Ang Lee got his Director's Oscar a few years late (he deserves two: Brokeback and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Otherwise I can live with most of the winners. Dolly remains fierce though, eh?
Those of you outrages, go volunteer for a queer youth program or something. It's just the Oscars--do something substantive to assuage homophobia and hetercentrism.
I am boarded: We when to Whistler and had a grrrand time. Turns out we found perhaps the only overtly Xtian B-n-B in Whistler--our host, methinks, took our same-sex-couple appearance on her doorstep as hit to the solar plexes. We started out liking the place, but its flaws became apparent: mediocre beds, limited brekkie on offer, great outdoor hot tub that came on and off all night. We weren't miserable or anything, but we agreed we'd not go back unless there wasn't any other option.
As for snowboarding? OMFG I loved it and took to it like a calf to a teet! My only difficult was getting up on my heel edge after strapping it: the physics of my fat gut meant I was short or too far forward each time. The (Dutch, damned precise people!) instructor scoffed when I said "if you can find a way for me to get myself up, the rest will be fine." He showed me a toe-edge lift, I was up and moving. the edge sliding was no problem, and as soon as our other instructor (the archetypal, "duuuude": 18, long hair, grunge look, great guy) described how to turn I was off. I got about 15 runs on the bunny hill and by the end of it wasn't falling at all. I was even less sore the next day than I usually am after skiing. Sold!
How do I know what to buy, in terms of board, bindings and boots?

querrelle and I also got some skating in Friday night. On a sheet of ice that puts our local community centre to shame. I felt all Jeff Buttlish. Sorta.
