What a Jewish, (ana)Baptist, or Calvinist ethos have in common is their celebration of individualism, in terms of work, wealth and social institution. Whereas the Catholic ethos is largely collectivist: pursuance of individual excellence, unless wholly situated as the betterment of all, is in fact evil as well as selfish.

Maybe time to read Weber again?

Ironically, I was just commenting to Steve that what most turned me off to evangelical Christianity was that everything is self-interested and about them.

Mmmm ... the Anabaptist's were also collectivist. My favorite Anabaptists still are. The baptists ) got all befuddled up when they mixed it up with the Calvinists and those evangelicals in England. While rejecting the catholic priesthood the Anabaptists believed the "priesthood of all believers" meant all believers acting in community.

Anabaptists believe in success of the individual as evidence of Gawd's grace though, no? That requires a degree of individualism.

It may depend which part of the anabaptist movement you're referring too. The anabaptists are pretty dispersed and diverse. I don't think that is a central tenant of the anabaptist movement though. I know it's not a part of the anabaptist sects I've been associated with (if we leave the Southern Baptists out of the equation).

Mennonites, totally applies. Hutterites too, non? Quakers, yup (but don't talk about it).

But nowhere nears as bad as the damned Calvinists. Damn them!
