In Maine, I grew up in a bilingual region - not mandated by law, but just a manner of circumstance. English and French. Locally produced public televsion (then, called "MPBN") used to transmit two versions of each show: one in English, one in French. Back in the day, when TV stations used to sign off at midnight (and even.. YES! turn their transmitters off completely!!), we heard "O Canada" first, then the US anthem.
Even in Central Massachusetts, we were able to watch television from Sherbrooke, QUE: CKSH. Ever watch La Petite Vie?
Sitcom that evolved from a theatre show. Kind of a warped-humour family sitcom (if you've ever seen the current Les Bougon, it was an obvious precursor of that...Married with Children isn't a bad reference point, either.)
I used to love that show. I'd watch it to mostly practise French comprehension. It was like Married With Children in it's humour and how everybody was a simple stereotype. And Popa was kinda woofy, although une barbe faux. And it was neat to have a man play the mother.

(Although that article doesn't make sufficiently clear that the family matriarch was played by a man in drag.)
