This is probably the best winner of the 90’s. It’s contemporary, not too over the top, and yet fits within the “parameters” of the usual Eurovision tune. Plus, Niamh puts on an incredible performance. Well done!

Agreed! What's amazing is I've tracked down a few different videos of her performing in in various guises (back then and more recently). She's always excellent but this was her perfect performance. What a time to do it.

And whoever was her stylist...I want to be my stylist. Shaved about 20kg off her with the ensemble, kept her comfortable, and didn't make her look like une poupee de cire, poupee de son.

Ah, one of the few times I was pleased with an Irish win (don't get me started on "Rock n' Roll Kids", danke... -_-). She was damned good that night and I was pleased she won, even though my favourite song that year ("Vrede") didn't win.

You know, I showed both "To Nie Ja" and "Rock and Roll Kids" to 2 non-ESC obsessed pals a while back. The loved both, but felt that the musicianship of Paul and Charlie (they played live as well) put them a notch above.

Vrede was great, but like nearly every Dutch entry had an air of robo-polish to it: every move, gesture, note was tick tick tick per-fect. And therefore surprisingly unengaging. Oh and the song ends 30 seconds before the ending...trails offffff.....

Paul and Charlie were more professional, but "To Nie Ja" had more soul, and was all around a better song.

Hehehe, I never noticed the "robo-polish" -- it certainly wasn't in "Hemel en Aarde" ^_- As for "Vrede", Ruth Jacott made it engaging for me -- there's something I adored about her performance that made me almost completely not notice the silly "I'm hip" white boy keyboardist.

As for the DVD's, I managed to get them from Tzachi. I'm kind of disappointed with some of their selections of songs, and it just seems hastily put together. I don't even get lyrics on subtitles?? ;_; Booo!!

Watch Vrede 3 times in a row. She uses the them gestures to the same cameras again and again. I agree Edsilia was an exception...hence her higher finish? I think robo-pop is what got "I'll face the big white wide world" turfed last year.

She caused a storm at the Saturday morning dress rehearsal in the Point by singing some of the song in English for which some delegations tried to get her disqualified! Ah, them were the days!

1994 was a classic year though... Sweden, Finland, Ireland, Russia, Hungary, Germany, Poland, France, the UK all stand out in my mind...

BTW if you're not aware, the eurovision.tv shop has all the 50th anniversary stuff (DVD and CDs) on 50% off...you totally should have at least the DVDs.

I think Brian's song isn't special, but they've tarted it up as much as possible. It's kinda the opposite of Dawn Martin in 98 (great song, well tarted up around a singer wit limited talent).
