Sarajevo school of rock
May. 22nd, 2006 12:19 amThis year's Bosnian entry was Hari Mata Mari (well, really it was their lead singer). They are perhaps the best known of a whack of excellent rock musicians--and mean guitars, drums, bass and the like--that emerged on the Sarajevo scene in the 70s and 80s.
Another major figure from the Sarajevo school was the band Merlin, and their lead singer Dino...who kindly has called himself Dino Merlin, which is easier to remember than Dino Dervishalidovic for those of us whose Bosniak vocabulary is zero.
As Dino he (with guest vocalist Beatrice) represented Bosnia at the 1999 Eurovision, paradoxically because Hari Mata Hari's song was disqualfied. This also-ran in the Bosnian national final finished 7th in Jerusalem and was, until this week, Bosnia's best result.
Are you ready for some Bosniak-French fusion hip-hop with a Balkan beat?
[it's a video...the mp3 is widely available for free and legal download. And sounds best LOUD]
