Went to see a local production of Cabaret last night. And except for some bovine asswipes trying to chatter during the show (Mrs. Egan's sssssshhh! remains effective PTBJ), it was an excellent evening. Unlike most good homosexualists I've not seen the filum (spank me moroccomole), so we'll have a movie night sometime to remedy that. So what?

Yesterday and today I've had the post-submission blahs. Today I'm trying to snap out of it, and it seems to be happening. Seems to be.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has culled the list of candidates to host the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. It's down to just three: Pyeongchang (Korea), Salzburg (Austria) and Sochi (Russia). Pyeonchang came within a whisker of beating Vancouver for 2010 and deserves the nod. Salzburg was so arrogantly confident for the 2010 vote and were shocked to be first relegated. Sochi is the dark horse, but their bid is inferior to the other two (many think Russian cities make the short list to avoid the Russian "everyone hates us" whinging roar). Here's a recap of recent and future host cities:

Summer: Barcelona (E), Atlanta (NA), Sydney (O/As), Athens (E), Beijing (O/As), London (E)

Winter: Albertville (E), Lillehammer (E), Nagano (O/As), Salt Lake (NA), Torino (E), Vancouver (NA)

Therefore regional rotation also advantages Pyeochang, which would be only the third Asian city to host a Winter games (Sapporo 72, Nagano 98 from Japan being the others). That also means a strong North American bid for the Summer 2016 Games would be in an excellent position.

Just know that the movie version is a lot more sterile and de-hoomo-ized, though there is brief mention. And the song "Cabaret" becaomes a celebration, and not a scary, desperate lament as it is in the stage show (or should be.) But I love the movie anyway.

I looked over Sochi's bid a few months ago, and I was rather impressed by it. I think it would be pretty cool for it to be there. I agree about Salzburg - yawn.

Having been to Sochi in 1990, I hope they've done some infrastructural upkeep since I was there if they want to host the Games. Though I'd still rather see Pyeongchang or Sochi get the games than Salzburg.

I had my all-time worst restaurant service in Sochi... in a Chinese restaurant managed by North Koreans. Oh, that was an experience.

I'm wondering how serious the minor internet chatter about a 2016 Summer Games in South America might be? Buenos Aires or São Paolo, I'd have to guess. No Olympics, Winter or Summer, have been in either South America or Africa, and I'm guessing South America has a better shot.

Rio tried for 2012 and couldn't get short-listed. The IOC has become really tough about the stability and financial issues--both of which make it very difficult for African or Latin American countries (even Mexico today) to make the cut. A shame I think.

I was just surfing the entries in Wikipedia for the 2016, 2020, & 2024 Summer Games, & the 2018 & 2022 Winter Games (actually, I'm still doing that). I'd be curious to see what opinions you have on those pages. I'll definitely check out Gamesbid.com - I love this stuff!

I think Tromsø would be awesome: the first Artic Circle Olympics!And I think Queenstown in NZ could do it, but it's very small and isolated (4 or so hour drive from Christchurch; teeny airport.

Until there's no separatists in Quebec, Quebec City hasn't a prayer: they stoopidly thought the Canadian government would still pony up the $$ if they voted for independence.

For the summer games, only Durban and Cairo on the African continent have enough hotel space. Toronto would be kewl...
