something that most people would just take for granted that they can marry who they like. Well, until we have that right, clearly we can't say we're equal Australian citizens
hear hear! and this is exactly the reason r and i have not "married" and will not "marry" (as i think i have told you before)... by default, being in a hetero relationship, we enjoy all the benefits of "marriage"... tax etc.... but no way will we contribute to the discrimination knowingly by marrying legally. to me, the issue of denying equal marriage rights for same sex couples represents everything that is heinous about our government. my cousin is an example. she and her partner had two children. they used the same donor sperm so the children are biologically related, and carried one child each. unfortunately their relationship did not work out and they are now separated.... and neither they nor their children have any legal rights to be protected the same as separating/divorcing couple/children of a legal or de-facto marriage here. had one of them decided to deny the other the child they carried, that would be it... no legal recourse at all for either parent or child. that is a huge tragedy! luckily, they are decent and reasonable women, and have kept the children together in one home as a base, and equally share in the responsibility of raising them.
it's kind of ironic that tasmania, which was the last state to recognise/legalise gay/lesbian relationships, would be the first to amend discriminatory laws concerning tax etc.... !!!
