brothers and sisters in every single part
Jun. 26th, 2006 12:27 pmIt's 30C here in Vancouver. We panic out here when it goes above 25C. The good news is that our air pollution gets sucked into the Fraser Valley, an area of BC with many, many evangelicals and Calvinists. Blue skies here in Homo Central though...who's side d'ya think Jesus is on now? Hanh? Hanh?
Speaking of hanh, on Thursday I'm off to NYC for a visit with the family. With typical Egan organizational capacity, mes 'rents have booked the closing on their new home for Friday. Because it couldn't have been on Tuesday, after I've gone. No they're not moving out fo their home (they sold and vacated that one months ago). And no, they're not itching to move into the new one: they'll be living chez Nanny until Nanny dies. They grabbed the house to avoid capital gains taxes and the like. They'll do some leisurely renos. And not to be a pessimist, but it's entirely possible that Ma will die before Nanny--and I can't see Da moving there on his own. Nanny turned 99 this week. All reports is she's like a typical 75 year old, which is plenty old to keel over too.
I guess I'm officially in the "talk about those who are dying or sick" phase of life. 50+ more years of this will be tired.
A week ago, I had grand plans to try and organize lunch with the likes of
danbearnyc. Today I'm inclined to sleep 12 hours a night and spend the rest of my time on the beach. Or on the back deck firing up the barbie. And going out with my cousins. If it's hot, I won't torture myself on The Subway into The City (when you're from the outer boroughs, Manhattan is The City, even though you live, techically, in The City). I toyed with the idea of bringing my 'blades, but the only place sealed enough to skate is the street. I don't drive in NYC unless an emergency; I cannot imagine skating amidst the traffic. Though no doubt my brothers would say "no biggie."
I am, however, looking forward to seeing my sister and brother and their progeny. Ditto my cousins. I've lived away for so long I rarely pine for their company, but it's always great to hang with them. I cannot imagine what it's like to live without siblings and cousins-who-are-like-siblings. It was madness, it was damaging, but jaysus it was also fun.
Feeling a bit wistful and reflective today. Hmm.....
