If Sarah Polley's directorial début is any indication, a powerful new voice in Canadian cinéma has arrived. Her adaptation of Alice Munro's short story "And the bear came over the mountain" takes a stellar dense narrative and fleshes it out into a feature film--without compromising the narrative. And her 3 lead actors--Gordon Pinsent, Olympia Dukakis and (especially) Julie Christie--breathe life and love into their characters. It is a film about love, ultimately: what loves means, how love manifests, and just how much one is willing to do for the love of one's life. And how you demonstrate on the universe's terms what your commitment is to someone: not platitudes, not presents. Presence.

I hope this gets widely distributed.

I haven't heard or seen anything of Gordon Pinsent for decades. Used to Watch CBC programming on the Windsor, Ontario station when I lived in Detroit and he starred in a number of things. I recall I liked him. And Julie Christie?! haven't heard her name in about as long.

I hope it gets wide distribution, too so I can see it down here in the states.......if Sarah Polley directs as well as she acts, I'm all ready to see it.

I'll check it out. It's often good when actors become directors and versa vice. They can understand what the other needs and provide it.
