Away from her
Oct. 1st, 2006 05:14 pmIf Sarah Polley's directorial début is any indication, a powerful new voice in Canadian cinéma has arrived. Her adaptation of Alice Munro's short story "And the bear came over the mountain" takes a stellar dense narrative and fleshes it out into a feature film--without compromising the narrative. And her 3 lead actors--Gordon Pinsent, Olympia Dukakis and (especially) Julie Christie--breathe life and love into their characters. It is a film about love, ultimately: what loves means, how love manifests, and just how much one is willing to do for the love of one's life. And how you demonstrate on the universe's terms what your commitment is to someone: not platitudes, not presents. Presence.
