Lately I am in the Cuisinart™ of life: lots on the go, lots to deal with, much of it good, much of it challenging, some of it teh suck. I'm not in a bad place very often...but it feels like I'm not in one place for very long either. *cue Dead or Alive*
Yesterday was a 6 hour seminar where research trainees give "what I done learnt" presentations, mostly in research teams. The best presentation was by the one trainee with no academic (i.e. university) background: he took the piss creatively and humorously out of academe's self-importance. One of my (former) students kicked it, and my former collaborators finally presented some data from the questionnaire I largely shepherded through development last year. But mostly I marked papers. I finished number 31 (of 34; 3 extensions) around 18h00 last night. Which I'll hand back this morning.
Tomorrow I'm off to parts East: Halifax for a conference through 'til Sunday morning, where I'm presenting a paper on HIV risk narratives and queer youth (how many times can you say unprotected anal intercourse in 5 minutes?). I love Halifax, but am not looking to the well-intentioned "so what are you doing now" queries. Former PhD golden boys are expected to be tenured 5 years after finishing their PhuD. That sort of requires a job in the professoriate though.
Then Sunday I pop over to Montréal for a quickie. I want some R-n-R. There will be mens. There will be poutine. There will be scavaging in the clearance bins at Archambeault. I may pop over to Le Stud and fondle my man boobs whilst putting on lipstick. Then an early flight back to Vancouver Monday morning.
And then week it's Nu Yawk, hanh? Gonna see my mutha an' fatha, hanh? Fa Nanny's 100th hanh!
