I haven't seen the movie, and while Hudson sings it well, she sings it like a nice pop song. But Holiday blows her out of the water as far as singing it as a character song, a fierce angry diatribe from a character in total self-denial, completely convinced she's right, but still desperate. She just seems so much more true to the nature of the song. Hudson's rendition is too supplicating. (right word?)
I think Hudson added a level of vulnerability to it that gets lost in Holiday's performance. And I think Hudson was trying to both stake her claim to the song while giving props to the original. An allegedly moody and at time bitter original.
