my parents took me and the other lil fooks to our first concert--The Carpenters!

None of us knew Karen played the drums. How kewl was she?

What a voice, what a shame.

Couldn't agree more. I'm totally envious that you saw them live.

The Carpenters are an integral part of my childhood as well. For some reason, summertime activities whether a cross-country station wagon trek to Yellowstone or just a hop down to the swimminghole were accompanied by the Carpenters coming through on the tinny AM radio. Couple that with warm peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a swarm of irritated bees. There is nothing better, in my estimation, than a group sing-along while heading out in search of that idyllic summer camp site.

It is a shame, and very bittersweet as well.

When Molly was a baby I used to sing her every Carpenters song I could remember. Them and Joni Mitchell. he still wants Carpenters when she doesn't feel good and needs to be babyish. They were such a part of my childhood. Karen was one of the greats.

So was Cass Elliott. 2 brilliantly talented women whose talent was cruelly eclipsed by oppressive societal expectations about body image. I feel a bond.

Tough biscuit...heh...I'll own that!

I mostly have the bad body fever beat, but there are still days. I deliberately took that on in myself when I became the Ma of the wee diva. Girls learn body image from their moms, and I always want her to feel good in her skin. I musta done OK so far because she unabashedly loves her body and appearance.

"I don't know what to wear-I look so good in everything"

One time my less that enlightened grandmother made a comment about her having a round tummy. (Kinda silly since she is a tall leggy amazon, but all little kids are a little round in the middle.) Regardless, Molly lifted her shirt, patted her tummy and said "yeah, pretty great, isn't it?"

What a kid-I'm sure crooning Carpenters in her infant ear helped.

The Beatles and The Carpenters were some of the only pop music my parents had in the house when I was a lad. Later I went through my cooler-than-thou phase about Karen and Richard. I'm so glad I got over it.

Oh, that voice.
