A while back (months? years?) I heard about an international collaborative history project about the dissolution of Yugoslavia in general and the Bosnian war particularly. I've been keenly interested in the region for a while, but am only now looking to do some reading about these events.

Anyone know the project I'm thinking of? Or can recommend a substantive text, published relatively recently, about the conflict? Amazon's of no help since most books published since 95 seem to inspire the rancour of some constituency. I thought about picking the book that Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs all loathed (thinking it must be truesque if none were happy with it), but found no such book.

A school friend of mine wrote the book "A Paper House" which I confess I haven't read but I know was widely respected, but I suspect it's not what you're after...sorry!

Misha Glenny seems to be one of the most authoritative authors on the subject. I haven't read his work yet, but whenever I've heard him interviewed, he's come across as knowledgeable and impartial.

If you read it and like it, let me know!

The problem with History is that when the events are fresh and the primary sources abound, and there is no risk of anachronism, then there is the matter of interests. As time passes, the forces to bias the narrative *tend* to get less fierce, but then the primary sources are lost and chances are our interpretations will be anachronic.

It is an impossible subject! :-)
