Aug. 1st, 2008 03:05 pmJour de congé in lieu of working all last weekend, so I've started 4 days off. Monday is BC Day and Sunday is Pride. So today is liposuction and tomorrow botox.
This is the ostensive 150th anniversary of "the founding" of BC, which with respect to the creation of a crown colony named British Columbia is accurate. However the history of this place goes back many more thousands of years. And the First Peoples of this part of the continent had a complex arrangement of social order, commerce and intercultural co-existence that rivaled Europe. Of course some of our ilk endeavoured to "civilize" these folks through mechanisms like Indian Residential Schools--the paradox of which is particularly perverse.
Regardless, I feel lucky to live here.
Not many big plans for pride: a dance party for the furry and fat well after Sunday's parade, but mostly some chilling. We're gonna hit the Powell Street Festival on Saturday and have ambitions about the pool and a skate for Monday. And I must call Ma, though I'll call her again on the 7th, her 70th birthday.
Life is good. If not entirely captivating to recount.

Date: 2008-08-01 11:42 pm (UTC)You should post a commemorative photo like mine.
Have you read Tales of Neveryona? I read some of it years ago when I didn't really understand it. I just finished a new read of it and you reminded me about what it illustrates about different kinds of social and commercial and inter cultural mechanisms. A helpful "parable" for me. You must have encountered it at some point in your readings or work.
