I hear ya [livejournal.com profile] bearchow, I hear ya.

The other night at [livejournal.com profile] querrelle's, the screen on my Apple Powerbook G4 DVI went totally dim. Not black, but very very dim. Max got to see my first hissy fit (for about 30 seconds).

Yesterday it seemed fine, but as the day wore on it started flickering. And once I attached my iPod, it dimmed again. The guy at the Apple Centre thinks it might be the monitor. $2k to replace that.

Wait--he just called, and it tests OK. But I've asked him to keep testing it on battery power. There is definately a problem.

Now I must go and get ready for my fantabulous spa weekend with the man I love!!!!

Totally, truly, lustily love!

Spa weekend sounds great. Where are you off to? We've got spa towns by the sackful in western Victoria, and the Daylesford/Hepburn Springs area is a fave of John's and mine for a weekend getaway. You've given me a great idea for when he gets back ...

We're off to Skinnydips at Avoca Beach, on the Central Coast. To relax, be pampered, and have lots and lots of nookie :-D

If it's flickering, it's likely the inverter for the backlight (or the backlight itself) that's failing. Which is sad. The LCD itself is the expensive part - the backlight is just a cold cathode flourescent bulb. In a perfect world, you'd just replace the backlight for $50 and be done with it.

Except for the fact that the TiBook screens need to be glued together to achieve that fantastic thinness. You can't even get it apart to see what's wrong without causing massive damage. So you have to replace the entire screen. Whoopsie.

The TiBook is not built to last.

I have noticed ... and I am definitely not going to invest in the 17" Powerbook after this (as I remember, don't you have a TiBook too?) ... but I was expecting that mine would last at least longer than the warranty ... Oh well, irony is, even if I get screwed by Apple this time, I am likely to buy another Mac, not only I am a sucker, but I just can't live with using GIMP, at least for now!

Yup, I have a TiBook as well, one of the first ones. It needed warranty replacement within the first week. Now the DVD-ROM drive is failing and the keyboard is wearing out.

At least my hinges haven't broken, and my paint isn't peeling. I baby it as best I can, but one of these days something major is going to fail and I'm going to have to replace it. I think the new 12" looks pretty solid.

Or maybe - dare I say it - a tablet PC...

I thought about a tablet, but most of them are so ... heavy ... and most of them can't be a stand-alone computer ...

Sorry about your powerbook woes :(
If it's going to cost that much, you might seriously consider a new one.
On a lighter note, ya'll have a great time this weekend!
